MBNA originates in 1982 when Charles Cawley founded a small bank to take advantage of the booming credit card market. Rather than fight for market share through the pricing of its credit cards, Cawley decided to partner with organizations, universities, and associations. This technique paid off and largely contributed to the immense success and growth MBNA experienced over the years. The company was issuing its credit cards to the more affluent individuals who were less likely to become delinquent. And by offering partner organizations, a percentage of revenue generated on cards issued to members, many were willing to sign up to the program. MBNA now known as FIA Card Services was acquired by the Bank of America in 2006. Outside the United States, MBNA operates in Canada, and the United Kingdom issuing credit cards to customers in these countries.
